Phlebotomy Essential 101

Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 prepares a student with education, training, and experience to perform skin punctures or venipunctures in a hospital, clinical lab, or Doctors office. A minimum of 50 hours of didactic and 50 hours clinical instruction will be presented.

This course provides theory and clinical experiences needed for the proper collection of blood and other specimens used for diagnostic testing. Emphasis is placed on ethics, legalities, medical terminology, safety and universal precautions, health care delivery systems, patient relations, anatomy and physiology, and specimen collection. Upon completion, students should be able to safely perform procedures necessary for specimen collections on patients in various health care settings and may be eligible for national certification as phlebotomy technicians. Students will also become BLS/CPR certified upon completion of course.

Course Objectives

  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the phlebotomist’s role in the healthcare system.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of the phlebotomist’s work environment.
  • Evaluate the biohazards present in the phlebotomist’s work environment, and take measures to ensure lab safety and infection control.
  • Possess a competent working knowledge of the documentation and equipment used by phlebotomists.
  • Demonstrate competency in fulfilling the responsibilities and job duties of the phlebotomist.
  • Demonstrate an ability to apply gained knowledge and skills to work with special populations and to accomplish specialized phlebotomy procedures.
  • Describe the procedures, considerations and quality control measures involved in blood culture collections and point-of-care testing.
  • Demonstrate competency in understanding and practicing proper documentations skills.
